GetNetWise
AT&T recognizes the growth of Internet services is surfacing additional concerns for its consumer customers, educators, and particularly for families and children. AT&T as an industry leader is addressing these concerns.

AT&T is a founder and co-chair of the coalition of online companies and nonprofit organizations who created GetNetWise: You’re One Click Away, a comprehensive Web-based resource that is easy-to-find and use. GetNetWise will help to ensure parents have at their fingertips the technology tools and tips, safety referral contacts, and suggestions on quality content online that they need to help kids have safe, educational and rewarding experiences online.

GetNetWise is the latest in a series of initiatives led by AT&T. In 1997, AT&T, along with a group of online companies, hosted the Internet Online Summit to deal with policy maker concerns about child pornography and child stalking. In 1998, AT&T led the industry’s initiative on a pledge made by executives at the Summit, to create and launch America Links Up, a national outreach campaign to educate families about the Internet and kids online safety issues.

The Issue:
The Internet provides children and adults with new forms of entertainment and with the ability to access information and communicate from almost anywhere on the planet. The Internet is often compared to a global village-a place where people from all parts of the world can come together and share their ideas, with society benefiting as a result. But just like any community, the Internet has places where a parent might not want his or her child to venture. Parents may want to understand how they can help their children use the Internet safely and how to avoid places or information that parents feel are inappropriate for their children. AT&T Worldnet Service provides information and access tools which can help parents and others who work with children.

Our Position:
AT&T supports many of the organizations engaged in developing guidelines for the safe use of the Internet. AT&T endorses consumer education about how to have safe experiences on the Internet and the parental controls so that each household can make its own choices. We believe the use of end-user software controls in conjunction with active parental participation enables parents to manage the content available to their children. Management of content for children, setting usage rules, and monitoring online activity is a personal, parental decision. We have worked with Microsystems Software Inc., and SurfWatch Software Inc.

The following vendors offer AT&T Worldnet Service customers software that can be electronically downloaded from their websites. Beginning May 11, 1998, AT&T Worldnet Service is happy to announce the availability of Cyber Patrol software and updates free of charge for the first year. After that period, you'll have the option of continuing with Cyber Patrol at a special discount off the standard list price.

SurfWatch offers a 30 day free trial without further obligation. At the end of the 30 day trial period, you have the option of licensing the software at a special discount for AT&T Worldnet Service members. Click here for more product information.
